No 10. Something else for Malaysians to feel good about, other than the 10.1 percent GDP growth in the first quarter. According to the Swiss-based Institute of Development Management, we are now the No 10 most competitive nation, the only developing nation to be in the Top 10, and we are ahead of Germany, Austria, Holland and Denmark, among others.
The institute's World Competitiveness Yearbook 2010 attributes the big improvement in Malaysia's performance to some of Najib Razak's policies and economic measures.
There are still some weaknesses in the economy (read here and here), but things are definitely looking up.
p.s. For the thick-skulled, do remember that this is not what I'm saying, ok, this is what the Swiss-based institute has established based on research on comparing Malaysia's competitiveness with over 50 other countries. .
Who is this Swiss based organisation? I dont think anybody knows who they are. For all we know, they could have been some obscure body who gets paid to paint a rosy picture of our economy. These days, money buys anything, including principles.

ReplyDeleteBe grateful to the non-Bumi.
True Datuk Rock. Still, the rakyat wants to see whatever the achievements, be it international ranking, or fdi statistical analysis be translated into better wages, better standard of living, better government delivery system etc. The people has high hope that the government will turn around the economy. One day too, they will realize (especially the Chinese) that you can't win the people's mandate through bad-mouthing and empty promises.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations.
ReplyDeleteBut what does that mean to Amat in the kampung, Ah Chong in the new village and Muniandy in the rubber estate?
The Swiss banned minarets and now to appease us? What competitive edge with still no difference with the rakyat's wellbeing. What more with the billions of financial losses - MV Augusta, 2 oil fields, cost over-runs. Rise rakyat!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Dato Sri Najib!Keep up the good work!

Got the P/S message,Bro though it sounded kind of intimidating with thick skull and all that ;D.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, S&P and Moody's had average ratings for our Sukuks (A- and A3) respectively which puts them within investment grade but, only just, as can be noted here for those who are interested.Conversely, we all can cheer up as Moody's and S&P did not come out of the economic crisis smelling roses regarding their rating games.
Maybe, once the brother and the chinaboys are sacked then more people will be forthcoming on how to stanch that deficit and get back to AAA (+ due appreciations for Malay voters in HS, Bagan Pinang etc are long overdue which beats shortsightedly filling the pigs trough with swilll hands down anytime which by the way is waste of precious dough on recycling useless garbage)
Also thanks for acting on my alert in the previous thread about the competitiveness news. As I said there we are all awaiting Skilgannon's "esteemed" reaction
Any ranking that doesn't include the two strongest economies in the world: China and India, doesn't worth its salt.
ReplyDeleteChecked out the ranking, and China and India was not in the top ten. Are you kidding me? Malaysia is more competitive than China? This ranking is obviously rubbish...
Yeah...bravo...for a country where one can't find sugar in sundry shops.

I have travelled to many of the countries in this survey and I can assure you 10 is a bit far fetched. We are not that good.. yet.
Lets refrain from resorting to quotes from obscure organisations etc. It reminds me of our "first lady's" recent award from some random organisation in the US which tax payers probably paid for.
I notice you haven't had time to dig up on that issue. Nut Graph seems to have done a good job in investigating. That is what I call journalism. Go learn from the best. You seem to be critical of Kali but you are no better.

ReplyDeleteHow does the report from IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook differ from The Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010?
I believe the one from World Economic Forum present a wide angle of economic perspective rather than from IMD Business School.

Asian Countries Make Up 4 of the top 10 Most Competitive Economies
ReplyDeleteWednesday, May 19th, 2010
According to the IMD business school in Lausanne, Switzerland, four out of the top ten competitive economies in the world are based in Asia, not a surprise to those who follow business and economics.
Called the 2010 World Competitiveness Yearbook, the Swiss business school report analyzed 58 countries, focusing on social, economic and financial data to come up with their list.
Examined are four specific categories: infrastructure, economic performance, government efficiency and business efficiency.
Elements within those categories include the provision of high-speed Internet, debt stress (a new metric) and how good the research and development in a country is.
The four countries from Asia appearing in the top ten are Singapore, which was in the No. 1 spot, Hong Kong, placing second, Taiwan came in at No. 8, and Malaysia landed in the No. 10 spot.
Malaysia may have been the biggest surprise. Not because of the fundamentals of the country, but being a relative unknown in the public eye.
America came in third, as concerns over financial markets and the government debt knocked them out of 1st place from last year.
For Singapore to retain its top spot, IMD said they'll need to increase their economic relationships with other countries in the region to participate stronger in the economic growth in the Asia Pacific.
Other countries listed in the top ten were, Switzerland at number 4, Australia at number 5, Sweden at number 6, Canada at number 7 and Norway at number 9.
We are better than holland!!!and we beat Germany too!!porsche..bmw..mercedez...we beat them all!!! man,,,we are the best!!!

Malaysia improved its "competitiveness" ranking to top 10 as the foreigners that want to set up their companies in msia can get so many goodies, ie tax exemptions, incentives, pay msians crappy salary, govt give grant, bla, bla, bla.....
ReplyDeleteas for msians/msian companies, we are bogged with high income tax (personal and corporate), high cost of living (thanks to expensive car and tolls everywhere), slow broadband (and highest rate in the world), low working hour (7/11, nobody leaves office until 8pm), 3rd world's education standard, and the list goes on.
So why excited about this Competitive Index shit?

Bravo to SJKC and Singapore education system!
This is only a 'shiok sendiri' news. Due to the fact that Singapore (located just a stone throw away from Malaysia) rank much higher and with our bad corruption index, it is an easy decision for foreign investors to by-pass Malaysia and opt for Singapore instead.

Tak ada apa yang boleh buat contoh pun. Apara. Cakap je pandai, kerja macam cibai. Sapa-sapa yang rasa Singapore is much better pi duduk sanalah. This is a borderless world. Why u worry and why u care. There are other people who love to stay here. Afterall you guys yang bahalol ni request ramai foreign workers, maid sebab nak bayar murah dan buat hamba abdi. Kalau ranking no 1 tapi top job by mat sallehs and foreigners while local people jaga jamban pun tak guna jugak. As long as we are in the middle, not too weak and not too strong, then it is OK. Why we need to be like Singapore? We want to be competitive in every sector but no need to be no 1.

“Bravo to SJKC and Singapore education system!”
ReplyDeleteWe don’t need anymore compliment, we had enough, and perhaps some motivation in monetary term will do.
“Ya very brilliant LKY learnt well from the British. Their source of uninterrupted lifelong supply of cheap labour..”
Singapore is now a knowledge economy, what they need is the supply of knowledge workforce. And you are quite right to say Malaysia is their source of uninterrupted lifelong supply of relatively low-cost knowledgeable workforce.
“Can supply transport to pick-up at causeways some more.. no need to bundle them in tongkangs.”
Who need a tongkangs when the scholarship and salary can afford a SIA air ticket? I don’t know who still took the tongkangs now, it is very unsafe to do so especially along the Malacca straits.
