Dong promises mammoth rally

update 10/12: You Arrogant Dong! Zainul Arifin of NST says it - Dong Jiao Zong's mammoth threat against the government smacks of arrogance. Read his column in today's NST here.

In A. Kadir Jasin's latest thots on multi-racial Malaysia [To the Empire they go], he wonders what the Malaysian Chinese are thinking, now that Hindraf has got the ears of the Empire. 'I can’t imagine them making a beeline to London or complaining to the Chinese government. But according to Press reports, the Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers’ Association) had threatened “mammoth demo” should the government decide to continue the policy of teaching of mathematics and science in English."

Here's the report. SSDD. Same Shit Different Day, as King would say. I say let them have their day on the streets. Bring on the mammoth demo.

JIAO ZONG (United Chinese School Teachers Association) president Ong Chiaw Chuan warns that Dong Jiao Zong will launch a massive protest action should the government decide to continue with its policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in English, the Chinese press reported yesterday.

Dong Jiao Zong, which comprises Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees Association) and Jiao Zong, has maintained a firm stand that the government should revert to the use of mother-tongue languages to teach the two subjects in primary schools. Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein is expected to make
a decision after chairing the fi fth roundtable discussion on whether or not to continue teaching Science and Mathematics in English.

“The Chinese community has to act if the issue is not resolved,” Ong said on Saturday. He believed the majority of people from the various communities wish to see a reversal to the use of mother-tongue languages to teach Science and Maths.

He urged Chinese-based political parties and Chinese ministers, especially those from MCA, to be firm in fighting for the use of Mandarin as the medium of instruction for Science and Maths in Chinese primary schools.

“They also need to be mentally prepared, as once the government decides to carry on with the policy, Dong Jiao Zong will launch a massive protest action,” said Ong. He said Dong Jiao Zong feels that the teaching of Science and Maths in English is currently the greatest threat to Chinese education.

He disclosed that at the second and fourth roundtable discussions held on Aug 27 and Oct 21 respectively, most of the participants, including Dong Jiao Zong and educational and cultural groups from other races,
political parties, academics and former education offi cers, were not in favour of the “go English” policy.

“Studies by various educational groups and universities, and even the Education Ministry’s own survey, showed that the implementation of English for Science and Maths policy has not produced the desired
results,” he said.

Here they come...its not hard to see it coming to this direction after all 'guts' of questioning constitutional rights of the Bumis.
I urge the government to stand firm and not chicken out by the threat of 'massive protest'. Please do what is right for the country. Make those who shout Bangsa Malaysia swallow their hollow thoughts of wanting this and that but not willing to sacrifice anything on their part. Enough of trying to accomodate the monorities who are apparently ungrateful lots. If only they knew what is like to be minorities in other countries. Sigh!

Everyone in this country is selfish and racist!

Why have Chinese and Tamil schools in the first place? Have one SK and SMK teaching all four languages.

UK is spending millions to introduce French in schools but we have the resources but are blind to utilise it - all in the name of culture. BAH!

This is Malaysia. Lets start living the MALAYSIAN way.

p/s: Some fanatics go around claiming they are Chinese and Indians instead of Malaysians. I wonder how many of them have ever been to China / India or have any linkage to both countries?

  7. Sdr Rocky,

4). Mempersembahkan kepada Raja-Raja Melayu agar menitahkan kepada Perdana Menteri Malaysia mengagihkan keuntungan Petronas kepada setiap keluarga Melayu sebagai ganti rugi kehilangan hak keatas tanah, ekonomi, adat resam, bahasa dan kemakmuran Melayu sejak kedatangan pendatang.

5). Lain-lain yang difikirkan sesuai dan berkaitan.

Rakan-rakan blogawan boleh memperbaiki lagi cadangan ini. Barangkali inilah satu - satunya cara terbaik untuk memulihkan semula keyakinan dan semangat orang Melayu. Kini Sudah sampai masanya!.

  9. It is guilds and association like Jiao Zong that is one of the main hindrance towards a bangsa malaysia concept. It is movement like this that hinders, refuse to let our children to integrate and even mix with each other. It's the insistence on a parallel, different education stream and a different Lingua Franca medium that keeps our children separated and alienated from each other.

I am amazed at how some quarters who is supposed to be the champion of Bangsa Malaysia can at the same time be the chief defenders of this separate education system. Is Bangsa Malaysia only applicable when discussion about Open Tenders? Questioning why would there be a Bumiputra partner in a business? ISA? 7 percent house discount?

Is Bangsa Malaysia not an identity before anything else. Identity must first be forged through education, it amazes me at how some are so oblivious to the face whey there is no Bangsa Malaysia when we have this parallel education that separates our children instead of unite them.

If Jiao Zong insist on Chinese Language medium, Chinese textbooks and even Chinese values and education system perhaps it's time they stop and think whether they really want to be Malaysians or Chinese Citizens living in Malaysia. Integration and one school system is the way. And if they want their demo so be it, but don't justify and try to sugar coat it by using Bangsa Malaysia as an excuse.

  13. I disagree with Dong Jiao Zong. The fact that the teaching of Science and Maths in English has not been effective may be reflective of the calibre of the teachers and the curriculum rather than the language in which the subject is taught.Surely the fact that some of the latest scientific research and their publications are in English in prestigious journals says something for the teaching of the language in English. I had often interviewed Chinese educated students who could not even understand requirements in the application forms. Furthermore, most of the Malaysian graduates whom I have met, are unable to read English language research journals and even news magazines due to a poor command of the language. We should put aside all this nonsense of language based on racial considerations and choose what will be helpful to our future generation and enable them to be truly well educated.

They are not Interested in BM because they have no interest to communicate effectively with other races here. Not economically productive.. HAH??? Tak kan tak faham BAHASA kut?

Affirmative action to all Malaysian in needs. Thus together we close the wealth disparity gap. Together we prosperous in this land we dearly call My Homeland.

The mother tongue of all Malaysian is Bahasa Malaysia. That is our National language.

What is the point talking about Bangsa Malaysia when the ‘mother tongue’ from our previous country is still in our heart? We must decide once and for all; WHERE IS OUR HOME?

We are all born and raised in this country called Malaysia.

Let’s have a Mammoth Demo to support that.

  33. My view on the issue of teaching Math and Science in English.

It’s very disheartening, and to certain extends very embarrassing, should we decide to reverse the decision made by Tun Mahathir some 7 years ago.

We clearly failed to understand the challenge and rationale behind this move. Instead of pulling our sleeves and makes things happen, we decide to be emotional i.e. our usual selves.

We claimed to love our children, but yet making decision on their future based on low class ego and unfounded worries.

  34. Actually no need to strike, life will still go on as normal. As for Dongjiazong, even though I am a Malaysian of chinese origin, I don't know who they are, don't have the interest to know who they are and don't care who they are.

What I hope is the government reintroduce English medium school to the country with the criteria of passing the Bahasa Malaysia with at least a credit a compulsory requirement. Raise the bar for the Bahasa Malaysia and we shall have a high level of proficiency of Bahasa Malaysia, we will have everyone enrolling their kids into such school. We killed so many birds with one stone.

As of learning of mother tongue, we can always send our children to numerous tuition center for such purpose, not a big deal, but bring back the english medium school. Then we will have a real muhibbah environment for our kids.

    Bro,

Kita tukar DBP. Jadi DBBP. Dewan Bahasa-bahasa dan Pustaka.

Malah, tahun depan kita tukar nama jalan ikut bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Pelancongan dan bahasa tempatan. Translate terus pun boleh! Pantai Batu Buruk kita panggil Ugly Rock Beach. Bandaraya Kucing, kita letak signboard... Cat!

    Apa macam Bro? Ok ka?

Now the call of Dong Jiao Zong is being met with the same response as Mukhriz's comments regarding vernacular eduaction - smart move by the Association I say.

So now we say UMNO pls shut the fuck up if you do not want to compromise, and DJZ, also pls shut the fuck up if they do not want to compromise. Status quo?

Nice... only that now UMNO wants to redefine the right to vernacular education like the way they want to define special rights of the Malays. (Sure UMNOPutera untung one - screw the spirit of the constitution - and screw the non-UMNO Malays as well)

"All in all, you keep what's yours, and I'll keep what's mine" and no cempien bangsa here (sorry Mukhriz, you need to win UMNO Youth votes the normal bribery er, politik wang way!) if the status quo remains.

Let the Chinese eduationists fund their system as always, and UMNO dominate the national schools with their machais. WTF should they bother with each other's turf? It's the exams that determine the success of the system. Or is it UMNO now one-upmanship coming into the picture that the AGM is around the corner?

That is my take on this wayang kulit before us.

When I was in school everything was in BM. No worries. Except English. My English turned out OK (I think). Many others still do not understand the lines from a movie - the last movie that created such a confusion was Quantum of Solace - the twists lost some of my friends - and there were both Malay and Chinese. Tough, but there you go where English mastery is concerned even after 11 compulsory years.

    Rocky,

Hasn't anyone ever pondered that it is perhaps Mukhriz's latest call to the govt to ban vernacular schools that prompted Dong Jiao Zhong with this latest threat which would play into UMNO's hands to destabilize the situation to cause another May 13 riots? Why only out of the blue did Dong come out with this threat when all the time it had opposed teaching of Maths & Science in English. Don't forget that Mukhriz is not any ordinary UMNO member but an UMNO youth presidential aspirant who has the support of his father ex-PM Mahathir now making a comeback in mainstream policies. Don't only blame Dong Z J, but also UMNO extremists like Mukhriz who, instigated by his father, are trying to provoke another May 13 by incitement. Dong J Z has wittingly or unwittingly fallen into UMNO's trap to provoke racial tension by starting another May 13 which would give UMNO the excuse to declare emergency rule and put an end to all the opposition's gains in the last GE.

The Chinese should not support DJZ's threat, let them fizzle out and deny UMNO the opportunity to start another May 13.

Imagine a 16 year old with a 8 year old ability in national language....it will be an overwhelming situation based on existing resources...

    Hi All,

All comments towards Chinese in Malaysia is groundless. First of all, you must ask yourself, why so many Malay / India are willing to send their Children to Chinese School?

Couldn't you admit this is a fact?

Did you ask youself how many rural students facing the problem of learning maths and science? How many of them is Malay / India?

If you do not understand Chinese / Mandarin, you shouldn't give opinion, especially those are groundless, on this language.

Reading Syap post as follows: "I thought Malaysia Chinese speaks Hokkein or Cantonese so why is Mandarin the mother tongue?" ... I laughed cynically ... sorry I can't help to laugh. SYap does not even understand what is Chinese / Mandarin.

Let me explain to you, Chinese can be pronounced many ways, whether using Mandarin (this is taught in School, and it is Hanyu Pinyin), Hokkein, Cantonese, etc. The way of writing the word is same; only the way of pronouncing it is different. Understood now?

China is emerging economic giant, and Chinese is not only important to be learned, but mastered as well.

If you Malay/India who can read/write Chinese, congratulation to you. You have better advantage in the new era as China is replacing Japan as 2nd largest economic system in the world.

Now is recession, but China still can maintain 8% growth on their economics. Why? Didn't you ask yourself? Don't you think that it is a chance for you or your future generation if you / they can read/write Chinese?

Language does not belong to anyone! Malay does not belong to Malay; all can learn Malay. Chinese as well, and Chinese people do not bar your from learning Chinese, if you are willing to do so.

Please think of your future generation, if your children cannot master Maths and Science as they are taught in English, what are their future?

Learning new thing at the begining of age should be taught in their mother-tongue.

Malay's mother tongue is Malay; Chinese is Chinese, and India is Tamil; hence Maths and Science should be taught in mother-tongue.

    Brother Rocky,

this issue has been simmering, its going to blow out into the open. mark my words. as i have commented at Datuk Scribe's blog, Malays have very high tolerance level but once they get angry the will go "mengamok' and blood will spill.

Any of the commentators who comments that we Malaysian Malay to go back to Indonesia is really dumb and stupid and don't know their history. This is our land. Persekutuan Tanah Melayu and not persekutuan tanah china atau india.

You want your chinese language and culture, you are free to have them in Mainland China. You want indian language and culture please do so on the Indian sub continent.

Otherwise refrain from flaming the Malay sentiments because you do not want to have any "keris or parang to terbang and melayang"

i support that we have a single educational system with bahasa malaysia as the main medium and english as the second medium. perhaps we have 60% subjects in bahasa malaysia and rest in english. all schools to have one session with morning session. afternoon session is for each species to back to their own cocoon, (e.g. malay to religious school, indian to tamil school, chinese to chinese school, or what ever school parents want to send their children to - music, ballet, etc etc).

if Dong want to do mammoth rally, let them do it and i really hope that it will be really MAMMOTH. indian has done their part. if this one get really big, then malay have a good reason to hold the final one, and a super duper mammoth. then once for all, we going to make sure we use this opportunity to do clean up, really clean that after this we dont have issue with race anymore. never mind that malaysia will be in turbulence for few years, but if the malay can have a fresh start for malaysia, why not. we are going to face global economic turmoil after all, so it just the right time to put malaysia in deep shit.

    Dong, your call.

or we maintain status-quo. chinese continue to be towkey in poultry and veg plantation, indian do the cage cleaning and veg lorry driver, and malay is the loyal customer. shame on you malay, talk about ketuanan but even your food you cannot prepare your own. if you think that your fav ikan keli is supplied by malay, you are wrong!

  77. The Government has a huge decision to make in respect to teaching of Science and Mathematics in English, to continue or not to continue. Of course the supporting side will come out with their own statistics and arguments which basically says that our young will not be left behind in the quest for knowledge in this increasingly globalized world while the opposing side especially the Dong Zong will have their own selfish and chauvinistic argument also which basically say that Science and Mathematic if taught in English will be a threat to Chinese education in Mandarin.

I support the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English for the young starting from primary school. I believe the primary consideration of all parents is that their children will get the best education possible. Proficiency in Bahasa Melayu and English will benefit all Malaysian Citizens locally and Globally. The teaching of Science and Mathematics in English is a good start for all but needs time to be assimilated, and THE GOVERNMENT MUST HAVE THE POLITICAL WILL AND THE STEELY RESOLVE TO SEE THE POLICY THROUGH TO GET THE DESIRED POSITIVE EFFECT. NO flip flops this time please.

If the Dong Zong wants to hold a mammoth procession let them be, if they do it peacefully, then fine, if they want to turn it into a political rally and make it ugly, then, the Government should apply the full force of our Law against these persistent troublemakers. Alternatively, give the Dong Zhong what they want and have Mandarin be taught for Science and Mathematics but KEEP THIS POLICY FOR THE NATIONAL SCHOOLS.

When positive results start coming in through the use of this Policy, which I am sure it will, then I bet RM10 that many Moderate thinking Chinese Malaysian Parents who like other Malaysians we know only wants what is best for their children, will wonder whether they have been taken for a ride by the Chinese Educationists policy of segregrating themselves from the majority of the population and start sending their children to the National schools. This could be a death kneel for the Chinese vernacular schools, one can see why Najib came out with a statement recently that the vernacular schools will be around as long as the Chinese and Indians wants them. Hence, this is the real fear of the Chinese educationist.

Whatever the pros and cons are, the Government MUST decide for what is best for Malaysia and the majority of the population in General NOT for minority pressure group like the Dong Zong who zealously wants to segregate themselves from the majority of the population and imposed their will on the majority. Remember that these are the very same selfish people who refuse to cooperate and make the Wawasan school idea work.

Dont forget, Malays have made great strides and they have come a long way since May 13. Except for engineering and accountacy, Malays dominate the professions. You have everything to lose. So dont be stupid. This is the 21st century. This is not the age of Hang Tuah. Don't be influenced by hate-mongers and old-style jingoists like Kadir Jasin, the man who destroyed journalism.

Hello Rocky, 1st time commenter here, and i've been reading your blog for more than a year, due to the rash and emotional posts that have been received here I think I need to make a statement to set the record straight.

I'm a 21 year-old Malaysian Chinese who is a product of a Chinese Vernancular School studying overseas. I've done my education up to STPM level and was caught in the transition of Science and Maths to English. I do NOT agree with what the Dong Jiao Zhong claims about reverting those subjects back to Mandarin in primary school.

To question my eligibility to comment, I've even done some temporary teaching at a National School after my STPM while waiting for my results to come out. I know as much as most teachers on the pain of teaching and changing a something that should've been kept since the 1970s.

I have experienced personally how English has helped me in my course as an engineer overseas and am convinced that this would not only benefit the students but also boost the education system as a whole. I've become used to the acronyms and technical terms of what is taught than my other coursemates from other countries who had their Science and Maths taught their mother tongue. I felt grateful that I was given the oppoturnity to be taught in it and felt the need for others as well in the future.

I'm a harsh critic of the current government and its policies but this is the only policy that I am in support of.

For all of those who are so adamant about learning something in another language, grow up. You can go on and claim advanced countries like Japan who teach in their mother tongue are still advanced, but do remember that the international medium is still in English. We cannot be stubborn and wait for translators to give us a new horizon once in every ten years or so. As all of you here are internet users I bet you'll know that information changes hands in a matter of seconds. What we need is 1st hand information, and English is the way to go. Besides, it is for Maths and Science subjects only, those who are cultural and articstically orientated would not have been affected, am I rght? Those subjects would still be in the mother tonguem it's not like they will teach BM or Mandarin in English.

I question the naivety of the commenters here and feel surprised that such comments are even possible at this time and age.

There is no harm learning another language and it will, I repeat will not affect your culture as a whole. I'm still a Chinese despite being able to speak in 3 languages and 2 dialects, what makes me so different? Instead you are given the oppotunity to understand others rather than suspect others are saying bad things about you in their mother tongue. If given the chance I would happily want Tamil as one of my spoken languages. Why not? It'll give me the advantage in another part of the world. So why the paranoia?

Stop these racist comments. You only shame yourselves by saying these words, you are also a part of hindering national unity.

I've always been proud to say I'm a Malaysian, but do those who claim themselves as owners want to recognize the minorities?

Dong Jiao Zhong does not neccessary reflect the will of the whole minority community, so do not make quick assumptions and brash remarks.

We all know that intergration is inevitable, just how much are we willing to sacrifice to do so? Vernancular schools do work, and I've done reasonably well in my time there. I believe that given good management and shrewd decisions by the proper people, this can also be done to national schools and maybe at that moment in time, vernancular schools can only be regarded as redundant. If not, I will support the presence of these schools.

We've been left far behind, are we willing to fall back even further?

    Bro Rocky,

I can't help but notice that a lot of Malay remarks against the Dong J Z have been wrongly and mischievously directed at the Chinese community in general, deliberately to stoke up racial tensions. I have no doubt that these people are UMNO trouble makers. These people who have been calling the Chinese all kinds of names and telling them to go back to China, should remember their origins as pendatangs too, some no doubt illegal immigrants who should be deported lock stock and barrel to Indonesia, Handramaut or Saudi Arabia. These UMNO people betray their racist tendencies and ought to know Ketuanan Melayu is no better than apartheid which has already gone to the dogs and pigs, and no doubt Ketuanan Melayu would go the same way to. The people have spoken on 8 Mar, and they will speak again to consign UMNO to dustbins of history in the next GE.

The issue here is clear. Dong J Z has made a suggestion which many Chinese also oppose. But why should all you mischievous and trouble makers from UMNO stoop so low as to attack the Chinese comnunity in general, unless of course you deliberately want to achieve UMNO's racist agenda of causing racial trouble.

All you UMNO scumbags are as bad or in fact even worse than the Dong J Z in the sense that you deliberately tarnish all Chinese as Dong J Z supporters which is not true.

Sometimes I wish people could see that organisations like Dong Jiao Zong are not representative of the entire Chinese community.

I'm a Chinese who doesn't have a good grasp of Mandarin or the other dialects because I never went to a vernacular school. But I have a good grasps of Bahasa Malaysia.

Do I get ridiculed by other 'real' Chinese because I can't speak anything Chinese properly? Of course I do.

Do I hold it against them? No I don't.

Do I agree with what DJZ wants? No I don't, but its no point being racist about it.

Just like one commentator pointed out, raising the English teaching standards and ensuring BM is taken seriously will solve most of the problems politicians seem to be having about the policy.

But when I see racist statements, it just goes to show that there are not enough mature or rationale people for this country to actually move forward which is very worrying.

Browsing thru' most of the comments, it is quite frightening that almost all are very racist. What's happening to this country? Must everything link to race, can we think and look from another angle?
Why nobody has ever asked the reason why Dong is against the teaching of M&S in English? Why nobody ask has there enough qulified English profiency teachers to teach M&S in English?
Have you seen the M&S exam answers that the students produced in English? any improvement? The answer is a BIG NO.
So why continue teaching M&S in English? You want to learn English then increase the hours of teaching English, hire qualified English teacher to teach English, that is the straight forward solution.
If our leaders know what is best for the country, then the race based politic should not exist and those racist comments should not be there.

A very famous Pamelo seller, "MALI MALI LIMAU MALIS, MAYAK BESAP MAYAK CEDAP.. LIMAU BESAP MALI..was a familiar voice going around for years..

One day he was attacked by a huge tiger, shouted frantically as usual "LIMAU BESAP MALI TORONG, LIMAU BESAP MALI, LIMAU MALI...TORONG TORONG" noone came to his aid thinking that he was actually peddling his PAMELOS and EGGPLANTS!!..

Hehehe... Some of our YB speak this kind of Bahasa Malaysia in Parliament too, will always tickle us the LIMAU slang they use!! 50years, SHAME!!

Aiyooo....rally lagi ka? Remind me on one the cartoon I read in international publication about Bangladesh in 90s...where factories were idle due to numerous rallies they had over there then. Malaysia pun dah kena penyakit nie. In fact one of my clients raised concern on the many rallies he saw in KL ....ini hindraf and PKR punya pasal le (I regret voting for PKR...stupid!!)

On serious note, I support single education system and english for Science & Math. But in order to do it, we need to revamp SK first. If you look properly, many SRK and SMK looks like sekolah agama. Tone down on this part. Let sek agama do their job. Introduce Tamil and Mandarin/others as elective so that others (Indian or Chinese or Kadazan or Malay or...) can learn it too. The more language our kids can hande, the better it is for them. We should also implement good practises found in SJK into SK. Once we introduce this, I beleive most Malaysian will send their kids to SK and enrollment to SJK will decline by itself.

And for DJZ, gov should be firmed in handling them. If ISA is needed here...so be it. Better late than sorry. Lets see if Najib has ball here.

To all Malay here, pls la, no need to shout rasicm or use harsh word. Kesopanan dan kesusilaan should be our first priority. We still can be firm/strong without being rude. Dont let other determine how we should react.
    God bless all of us.

When UMNO people & Utusan were regressively calling for an end to English being taught in schools for Science & Maths, no one made any noise.

Now when the Ding-Dongs display the very same regressive attitude towards English... these plastic pendekars start talking about keris, parang, genocide, May 13, and other bullshit.

  101. Just show how shallow and ignorant of all the posters here. Even i am deeply disappointed by some Chinese posters who have publicly denounce their own roots.

DJZ is the defender of what is left of Chinese in this land. They are only defending the basic rights of learning mother tongue written in the constituion. They are only against the teaching of Science and Maths in English which is consistent with plights of many Malay academician. I don't understand how does that plight be equaled to frank racisism and Chinese superiority. How would the accusation against us be justified. Those foul words and quotation of returning to China only shows the narrowness of ur mind.

By defending our rights of teaching our mother tongue does not collide with efforts of racial integration. In fact, both Bahasa Malaysia and English are given attention in sekolah jenis kebangsaan. In fact, u can c many graduates from sekolah jenis kebangsaan can communicate effectively in three languages. The educational system is not against the aspiration of the country. It is instead the inequality of treatment that parts us apart.

Have DJZ questioned about the special rights of BUMI, BM as the national language, Kings as the head of country? It is UMNO who has openly doomed Bahasa Malaysia, abused NEP, disrespect the kings. By implementing English as the medium of teaching, Bahasa Malaysia has already been doomed of its fate to be a effective intellectual language. I believe Bahasa Malaysia will slowly lose its influence until one day, it will become the endangered language. Then i will pity those that will only cry out in a frantic effort to save what is left.

I scorn upon the ideas of my fellow Chinese who posted here. How could u deny ur root? Those who have taken the language matter lightly, I condemn u for denying ur children of knowing ur origin. Many Chinese in foreign lands are trying to seek their roots, relearn of their lost language and recapture every glimpse of their ancestor's culture, but we Chinese here are instead proud of not knowing their own root, ridiculed the importance of own mother tongue and even supported the abolishment of Mandarin in the educational system. Pathetic

1 Mukhriz has touched the hornets nest and now he and the rest of UMNO/Malay must either destroy the nest totally together with the hornets or outrun the bugs!

2 Yes, they have been some price to pay in the implementation of teaching of Math and Science in English that was started 7 years ago. Some of the students did well, others were the collateral damage. But if we did not do it at all, ALL the students would have lost out.

3 I am talking from personal experience -- my 3 children were able to move school, and easily accepted in a new school in China because they did ok in the math and science entrance exams, which were in English. If not for that, they would have to lose a few years in English remedial classes.

4 I am in the business of searching and selecting technical experts for hitech MNCs. If I check the profile of the successful candidates -- they all have the advantage of the English language.

5 It is no secret why the Indians(fr India) are doing much better in international companies, leading global organisations and monopolizing CNN, BCC etc. Why? They have better command of the language compared to the Chinese(form China)!

6 The Chinese are spending billions teaching their students/children English, why are we denying ours?

7 I totally support the promotion of learning once's mother tongue as I also pay for my children to learn Mandarin so that they will benefit from the big China market. But the Global market and the wealth of information from all over the world is better learned through English.

Yes learn Mandarin -- at your own time and your own money!

8 Stop playing politics -- if you want to be in Malaysia, you must embrace what is rigt for the Country. All students in the country must be in ONE school system. It is time to have polical will to do what is right. No more optionalism!

Let's see how the government will act on this DJZ. Hopefully the government action is a proactive one and not a reactive one. We have ISA. Use it on their leaders now.. I believe the time we let DJZ to proceed with their rally, it will turn out ugly. At that time, opposition politicians will use this issue to gain more political ground stoking more racial tension..

Looking some of the comments here, I believe the ISA is still relevant. Maybe it will stay relevant forever in Malaysia. As long as racial segregation in our beloved country is present, I think ISA better ought to stay..

On the other hand, I support Mukhriz idea of one system for all. Just make sure minorities are not deprived of their right to learn their mother tongue. Make it an elective subject. After all, the malay also can benefit from this for having the chance to acquire themselves with other language. I believe this will really help racial unity in our country. BUT unfortunately some politicians will never see this but instead prefer to see our country to be segregated as it is. Maybe Malaysians who have this thought like mine can form a new party to pursue our own idea of Bangsa Malaysia..

Sigh... Dong Zhong and the UMNO nazionalists... two sides of the same coin.

As the arguement progresses, we have a whole bunch of Malaysian youngsters with "England no good" or "Inglis tak cun"... and having a hard time competing in this brave new borderless world.

And speaking of roots, my ancestors were from Kinmen/Quemoy... with a grandma being a Medanese Peranakan. That'll make my 'mothertongue' Hokkien, not Mandarin.

Mandarin is some northern language declared to be the official language of the whole of China. Thats it. And while we're on the issue, the Chinese in China are all rushing to learn English while over here.... well, I just said that already.

Lucky for him he is Malay and parents are fluent in English.

Learning to read the Quran to Muslims are compulsory. In Arabic. We send our kids to attend classes after the normal National school hours. We have no problems eh??

Almost 2billion Muslims worldwide, a necessity that we learn to read the Quran. Thousands of ethnic groups dispersed worldwide, each having its own distinct cultures and practises. NOTHING LOST!!

So what is all these nonsense about loosing ones identity, mother tongue and culture if not sent to National schools?

  109. Do u know that learning language is not the matter of economic gain, future prospect, competition globally, but it is the matter of preserving our heritage. Learning Mandarin is not about tuition and elective subject, but it is about knowing our origin, history, tradition, values, culture and arts. It is not about reading and writing only, but something bigger. Who will appreciate our heritage if not Chinese ourselves? We will lose ourselves, our identity and roots if we ourselves do not appreciate our own language.

I am a graduate from vernacular schools. I do not c any contradiction between learning mother tongue and future prospect. I do not feel that i love the country lesser than others if I intend to preserve my heritage. I don't feel I am segregated from other races by attending vernacular school. By learning Mandarin, I can appreciate the beauty of what is left over few thousand years by my ancestors. I can preserve my identity and yet I am a Malaysian that is faithful to the country.

We c other Chinese in other countries who failed to preserve last bit of their heritage and were being assimilated into the majority. For example, do Chinese in Indonesia fare better than us? Are they treated as equal even though they are assimilated, losing their language, culture and heritage. Some even lost their Chinese names A big No! discrimination still exist. Have u forgotten how Chinese were culled like pigs few years back? Have u forgotten the crime done by those against the victims? Murdered, robbed, raped!!!! During that time, are they even considered as equal? Pls provide justification, especially for those who claim that vernacular school system is the obstacle to formation of Bangsa Malaysia? How would u explain the unfortunate events that befell those who have abandoned everything that identify them to be assimilated??

When the demonstration by DJZ be viewed with such hostility? How come then the demonstration by UMNO youths be viewed as an act of heroism and to be encouraged and appllauded? Do u still remember the demonstration of keris that will be bathed with Chinese's blood? Do u still remember the threats that is being thrown by UMNO towards us Chinese? Do u still remember the ruthless demonstration done by them against us? Why such double standard?
Malays are allowed to defend their rights by ruthless demonstration but not other races? Threats of recurrence of 513 incidents, ISA, murder threats, violence; I have seen too much of these.

As I read the comments by Malays, I am perplexed as to why this issue is seen as "questioning Malay rights". After all it is about discontinuing teaching in ENGLISH (English mind you NOT BM). I am so bewildered, I have been scratching my head; yesterday I had a full head of hair, today there is a bald spot.

Malays also want teaching to revert to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools. I think that (in order to be politically correct) Dong should actually form an alliance with Malay groups to push for the reversion.

That said, personally, I would like the teaching of these subjects in English to continue. Not being an expert, I would like the educationists to evaluate this issue objectively and ensure what's best for our children's education.

Rocky, I am surprised, why do you want to stir and encourage this into a racial issue?

I do not c any contradiction of being a Malaysian and at the same time retaining my racial identity.
If u r so eager to ask other races to get out of the country, think back of ur situation and the narrowness of ur mind. Without the contributions of all races, u won't b sitting comfortably typing articles that incite racial hatred.

How is the assimilation of Muslims in Southern Thailand faring? Ended up with uprisings and needless terrorism that killed so many innocent peoples. Then u all make all the fuss regarding the negligence of their rights of practicing their values and cultures by Thailand government. What a hypocrite u r.
U deserve all the attention and yet u deny the basic rights of others. Thought I disagree with the concept but I'll try to understand from their perspective. I'll also suggest different concept for the Malay. I'll let the them choose it. For instance, Anwar's suggestion on Ketuanan Rakyat. Is Ketuanan Melayu better or Ketuanan Rakyat?

As for Dong Jia Zong demand, we need to understand why is the organization demanding? Is it reasonable? Why? If you disagree then you should provide different path for them.

Lastly, I'm not a Malay but I'll listen to you similarly I pray that you'll listen to me too. Listening is the path towards unity and a better future for all Malaysians. We may disagree but we're all Malaysian.

Fcuk all vernacular schools. Close them all - Chinese, Indian and Malay schools. Have only ONE medium of instruction - English - and let different races have optional subjects in matters like literature or religious studies. BM is compulsory for all.

English has the highest economic value of all languages. The Japanese, the Hong Kongers, the Koreans - they all regret that they don't have a proper command of English from their schooldays.

    Fcuk the vernacular schools.

Baguslah, ko paham pasal banyak sangat kekeliruan (aku rasa buat-buat keliru - tapi dari segi logik kantoi) pasal dialek bahasa Cina nak sokong Mukhriz.

Apasal pulak nak balik ke Cina nak satukan komunikasi? Bila derang mintak penglibatan kerajaan Cina? Kan yang dibincangkan ni sekolah vernakular? Kan itu yang Mukhriz sentuh? Payah sangat ker nak paham?

Apa logiknya buat gitu? Kan Malaysia tanah tumpah darah mereka, kita? Ada derang menyalahi apa-apa peruntukan dalam Perlembagaan? Kalo ada, tolong bagitau artikel mana. Mungkin satu hari nanti bila Khir Toyo balik Jawa, Mahathir balik Kerala (boleh bawak Mukhriz dan Hasmah sekali, yer tak?)

Lepas tu macam mana? Hai tak dibincang pulak benda ni. Mesti mangsakan pendidikan Cina sahaja dalam polarisasi ni.

Bab parti politik berunsurkan kaum bapak dia kata masih perlu pulak. Sekolah vernakular pulak nak jadi mangsa anak dia? Ada logik ker? Atau logik yang dipakai separuh-separuh?

    >>Kan lebih mudah, birds of the same flock gather together? SATU BAHASA, SATU BANGSA, SATU BUDAYA SATU NEGARA??<<

Kalau nak mudah maintain status quo jer. Nak undi, bayar duit, jangan buat macam tak biasa. Senang. ACA bukan nak buat apa pun. Ku Din berani nak tangkap ker? Gi makan roti la....

    >>Angkut balik saja anak bini kat TANAH IBUNDA. Yang duk menyemak kat sini APASAL??

Macam aku cakap la, la kalo tak paham konep tanah tumpah darah, si Khir kena balik Jawa, Sanusi balik Aceh (bawak sekali la bini import dia tu), Mahathir balik India (bawak sekali Mukhriz dengan Hasmah) boleh la kot. Kita tinggalkan Malaysia ni buat orang Asli. Jadikan Bahasa jakun ke Senoi Bahasa Kebangsaan? Eh takleh, ni dlam perlembagaan kata Bahasa Melayu jadi Bahasa Kebangsaan. Fairman 12:01pm,

It is history that makes what we are now. We are not talking about the 60’s, the education is a lifelong learning process. Want to discuss with me about schools?? Besides Chinese school, have you, your siblings or your kids had the opportunity to learn elsewhere?

My grandfather was a mosque Imam. He gave voluntary religious lessons to the community. QURAN classes are conducted at home, FREE of charge.

My late father, HM of a large Malay School. However he sent 4 of us to English (catholic based) schools and 4 others to SJKC (Sin Min Sg Patani). He wanted to try all the system available then, and experimented on all his children.

My husband is an Estate Manager, so talk to me about Tamil schools? Estates are involved and committed, my husband was appointed(automatic being an estate manager)in the schools committee.

My eldest attended the Chinese Kindergarden. I actively contribute, helped give speeches in BM or BI, as the Principal was a Taiwanese who spoke only broken BM and BI. (She would sweetly plead me to help her!).

Due to his VERY sad BM/BI performance, I enrolled him Year1 in a private school, Sri Bestari (under Lang Education, English based). His English and BM improved in just 2years. When I moved out of Bandar Sri Damansara, I enrolled him in NS to complete his studies.

I noticed my eldest was very loose and weak in his Agama, I decided to send my second son to a Private Agama School (covering full UPSR subjects too). Year 3, pulled him, too many subjects to cover. Year 4 I enrolled him in NS.

Finally, my two youngest, I sent them to National Schools where I feel they received that is needed, BM/BI/Agama. I had been and am an active PIBG committee member of my kids present schools.

In 2002, I was appointed a PIBG committee member of the Pilot Project Tabika Kemas for 4years. A joint effort between the Japanese Ambassy/KPLB, to look into the potentials of introducing Japanese PreSchool education concept practiced in Japan. We worked tirelessly with the Japanese experts sent fulltime to help with its implementation.

During long holidays, I send my kids as guest students, in Primary Schools in the UK, to let them taste the type of education there too. My brother is an educationist in the nearby University so, he would do all the arrangements to give my kids those opportunity.

For the past 4years, as part of community service, and the love of children, I give free Phonics Reading classes to the children of the poor community here.

Yes, I was from a Convent school, REVEREND MOTHER ALLYSIOUS was my schoolhead, Sister John was my class teacher. They did not teach only teach us English!!.

Hai nanti pi Baitulmuqqadis, pengsan nanti. Thinking that all Arabs are Muslims!!

My Chinese neighbour went to BALI for the first time. She was shocked when she noticed some locals eating PORK in the same restaurant. Only when I explained to her, the Indonesians have Indonesian names, speak Bahasa Indonesia, some even wear colourful sarong kebayas to churches for their Sunday prayers. Some are Buddhist, Christians, and especially so in Bali, they have lots of Hindus.

Year 2008, and still naïve like this Anon 7:23???

There are 8Indians and 10Chinese kids in my son’s class. They are polite, respectful, cultured, very open-minded and very communicative.

And through them, we, their parents too became very close friends. THE PRODUCT OF NS!!

Mahathir once made his buat-buluku-kembang speech about "..lets be global...(something similar to the effect)- to face foreign forces).

    Perhaps, (Datuk) Mukhriz (TDM's proxy and beloved son)- envisions this policy based on his father's vision. Although I agree that we should force today's children to learn Maths and Science in English, but yet, its still inconsistent in certain respects;

    1. Bla bla bla ... why not make English our mother-tongues instead? I realized after scrolling some comments there is a mention about Maths and Science is conceptual bla bla bla...thus needs a strong foundation in the language. Maths and Science has an inherent technical mode of language, which vocabulary acquisition is consistently needed level by level.

    2. Pardon my ignorance, because I skipped cross-studying before writing. Just want to know, is Geography(science), Accounting(maths/science - ???), Economics(maths/science - ????), Sains Sukan/Pertanian(science duhh)still kept in BM?

    3. Just by translating BM to English is not enough I suppose. We need to reformat the English/BM subject so much so that it should be branched out into 2 "sub-unit subjects (I don't have the jargons for this) - into Grammar/tatabahasa and Classic Literature/Sastera Klasik.

Imagine then children will have to learn 6 years studying the subject called Grammar/Tatabahasa and 6 years of classic Literature/Sastera Klasik (like comic/mangas, erotic poems, harry potters - seriously?) instead of just English, which is nonsense, and waste of taxpayers' Ringgits. This is the only way to force these kids into reading and writing !

Footnote: I hope that one day my children will have to write a long impressive proposal, thus entering into a contractual agreement with parents the next time they drag me into Toys r Us. During my time I just needed to display my puppy face to my dad.

    3. If the policy is envision on the basis that English is currently the global commercial language, then shouldn't these think-tanks oversee that Mandarin is slowly making its way up to the Billboard charts? Today, the Mandarin slowly being reduced to PinYin script (roman script instead of traditional characters) for commercial purposes (transactions, IT, learning curve, etc).

Many globalists are taking up Mandarin courses so that they can make good deals and develop trusts among Chinese markets and labors.

Being that, lets have Mandarin electively for our Malay-ethnic, Chinese-ethnic, Indian-ethnic, and Lain-lain ethnic children.

    4. The Chinese Abacus/Sempoa arithmetic method should be in our math syllabus. The Abacus calculator has proven to turn kids into a walking calculator (useful for Moms when taking these kids out grocery shopping).

    5. Agama should be strictly Arabic and Jawi (but there is a danger employing Uztazes under gov't paycheck - instead import a volunteer, appointed by the Prophet of end of time through . Teach them that Islam is Here and Now not There-and-Yesterday. Historically Muslims were the best globalist (synergizing or linking heavenly mandate to worldly arbitraries), but today the sphere of concern and influence has been reduced to "make-believe" national borders. Pardon the irony.

Lastly, earlier posted comments mentions a REFERENDUM. Yes, a referendum - decisive enough for this situation.

NEP recipients should have at least one member of the family to serve in military. Young NEP candidates also must also have an extra National Service. That in itself it perfectly ok. All political parties will definitely agree on this.
